Google Takes Over the Free World

You may not have seen ads that Google is running on your YouTube screen, but chances are, you will soon. Google Inc., which recently acquired YouTube, started testing overlay advertisements this week. The ads will appear after a 15 second interval across the bottom fifth of the video screen as you watch the clip. The ad space, which is partially transparent so it does not completely obstruct the view of the video showing underneath it, disappears after being displayed for 10 seconds.

Reaction from YouTube users is mixed. YouTube has been providing a service that users tend to think of as free, but it is not, and never has been, free of advertising. This is simply more blatant because it sits on the screen along with the video you are watching.

Since acquiring YouTube, Google has sought an alternative to the standard ad format for web videos, that is advertising at the beginning or advertising at the end of a clip. The company selected this ad format as the least intrusive to the viewer. In-video ads tested better than pre-rolls - commercials tacked on to the beginning of the clip - according to Google. When a viewer clicks on an ad, the clip itself pauses until the viewer returns to it.

The new ad format will seem familiar at least. It mimics what we see on television, secondary events which cover the bottom fifth of the television screen promoting other shows during the one you are watching. That will likely make the introduction of the new ad format a lot easier to accept for most users. And on second viewing of the same clip, the ad won't appear again.

YouTube is taking care not to unnecessarily alienate its 130 million subscribers, at least not right away. The ads can currently only be viewed on a limited number of content-appropriate clips, and currently the advertisements only represent a select handful of elite advertisers.

The company has to walk a fine line with them as well. Because so much of YouTube's content is user generated, even clips that are free of copyright violations could still be questionable content, inappropriate for or unacceptable to certain advertisers to suddenly find their brand names associated with it. The company will have to find a way to guarantee to advertisers that ads will only run on completely content-appropriate videos.

During the test launch, YouTube identified a select group of content owners who were willing to host the ads on their videos. Google announced that it will share ad revenue with these partners. Google will charge advertisers for every 1,000 times the ad appears, and has tantalizingly offered a cut of that revenue to content owners who want to cash in. Though to this point, there's no guarantee that the offer to host advertising will be extended to just anyone.

In the short term, Google has to gauge reaction from YouTube's hardcore fans, but more importantly, the company has to determined whether the model can be profitable, for itself and for its advertisers. Preliminary results, according to Google, suggest that the overlays are in fact generating a higher click-thru percentage than traditional advertising. But how much of that is the novelty of the format is unknown. And how quickly will YouTube users become blind to that form of advertising if it starts showing up in every single video? As any good internet marketer knows, click-thrus do not equal sales conversions, something else that Google has to track in order to keep its advertisers invested in the experiment.

No matter how the YouTube fandom reacts, the new ads are hardly the end of the world. If anything, users need to be prepared for a much wider launch of the ad format coming soon. So far, Google has said it will stay away from ads on the iPhone or AppleTV, and the YouTube ads currently only appear to users in the United States. But Google has to justify its $1.65 billion investment in YouTube, and has made it clear that some form of advertising on its videos was the inevitable result. If the last five years have proven anything, where there is a market, Google ads are sure to follow.

Dreams of a New Laptop

I want a new laptop. I want my new laptop to be shiny and new with keys that feel like magic when you type on them and a screen with resolution second to none. I want to be able to watch my favourite dvds on my laptop and see the sweat on Bruce Willis's face with crystal clear clarity as he dives from yet another bomb. I want infinite memory and amazing speed. I want to be able to bring down governments with it if I so choose. And play a good game of solitaire too.

There is a laptop that I think could do all those things, except possibly overthrow the government, I think I'll have to buy some software for that. The ASUS® VX2 Lamborghini Series VX274UL Intel® Core™ Duo T7400, 2.16GHz (VX274ULYL). Now I have absolutely no idea what any of that means. I'm not a techie. I know how to switch my computer on, install some programmes, use them and that's about it. Jargon is beyond me. But it says Lamborghini Series, that's got to be good and it costs $3896, that's got to be good too. If price is anything to go by its got to be extremely good, I reckon. A friend of mine has a laptop that cost $7792, or so he told me. That would be supremely cool. That probably comes with government usurpation software already installed. As tempting as that kind of power is, I think that I'll stick with the Lamborghini Series. Got to start slowly, work my way up.

Besides the Lamborghini Series says cool things like “8 X Super Multi Light Scribe” and “Colour Shine WXGA+ Wide Screen”. And it has a built in Webcam. I don't know what I would do with a Webcam. I'm very camera shy and extremely private, the idea of showing the general public my home makes me want to cringe, but I'm sure that once I've got it, and once I've figured out how to use it, I'll never know how I lived without it. I like the sound of wide screen though, and colour shine. Should be promising on the resolution front, or is my ignorance of computer jargon starting to show? I'm also hoping that at some stage someone will explain to me exactly, or even in rough general terms, what GeForce™ is. I'm not even going to hazard a guess. People will laugh.

I shall go into coffee shops with my smart new laptop, wifi friendly coffee shops of course, open it up and smile condescendingly at all the envious looks that come my way. I'll casually stretch my arms, click my fingers, and hold them above my magic keyboard while everyone holds their breath with anticipation. And then I'll order a latte and play a vigorous game of minesweeper. I'm quite good. My time for the expert is not too bad.

Unfortunately my new laptop in only a dream. Well the much desired Lamborghini Series is at any rate. Something much more realistic for my meagre budget is a basic little HP Intel Celeron, or an Acer TravelMate, or an LG Intel in the $714 – $779 price range. And you want to know something? I would love it to utter pieces. They say things like “Graphics Media Accelerator” and “WXGA Screen” and they're accompanied by lots of numbers that mean absolutely nothing to me. I'm totally boggled by the jargon and I love it.

So what if the screen resolution is not as perfectly brilliant as a 4k laptop. I bet Bruce Willis's sweat will still look just as fab to me. The resolution is so good on all computers these days that I probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference anyway. As for memory and speed, I have simple needs so I don't really need a gazillion gigabytes of memory. If I need more I'll get more. I understand that this is possible. And so what if I can't take over the world (I can always upgrade). I bet the keyboard will still be magic and that I can still play a killer game of solitaire.

Free iPod Movie Downloads

First of all, let me tell you that it is true that you can get free iPod movie downloads online without paying any pay-per-download fees. The only problem right now is to find the right resources in order to start downloading. Second of all, let me tell you how I found a way to get iPod movie downloads for free.

About 3 months ago I was looking for a way to get free iPod movie downloads but I couldn't really find anything that is worth joining, because most of the sites were forcing me to pay for ever movie I wanted to download, which made me completely pissed off.

Until recently, I saw an ad somewhere on Google, which claimed to deliver iPod movie downloads for free with lots of bonuses, free video converter and many other free downloads like music and games for iPod. Although, I was a little bit skeptical because that is way too good to be true, but I decided to try it out anyway.

I must admit that I have not been disappointed, I was very surprised when I joined my first iPod download service web site which provides with free iPod movie downloads, free iPod game downloads and free iPod music downloads. The service is truly amazing, I can download everything I want and even everything I don't want. I have a 3Mbit connection and I always download at a full speed, which makes it very fast and reliable.

I download free iPod movies within minutes, takes around 5-10 to download a movie for my iPod, oh, and I am not talking about songs, because those take seconds to download. The best part of this is that I get all downloads for free, I don't pay any pay-per-download fees, or any additional fees. This is even 100% legal and safe. This is literally the best way to get free iPod movie downloads online.

I am very thankful to the people who created such a good service, because I am saving so much money with an iPod download service that I lost count. This is my secret, if you want to get free iPod movie downloads then join an iPod download site with unlimited downloads. Free iPod movie downloads are available to everyone and in every country.

Feel free to check out the download service I am using.

Free iPod Movie Downloads with iPod Net Downloads. I am Earl Bennett and iPod Net Downloads is the best iPod download service that I have tried so far.

Leave It On Or Turn It Off?

One of the oldest unresolved controversies in the computer world is: Should you leave your computer on all the time, or turn it off when it is not in use?

Compelling arguments have been made on both sides. I’ll try to sum up the important points on either side, and I’ll even give you my recommendation, but ultimately, it’s up to you.

LEAVE IT ON:

Constantly warming up and cooling down is bad for electronic equipment, and the computer experiences some mechanical wear and tear every time you turn it on and off.

There’s also the issue of convenience. It’s much easier to plop down and go to work when you want to, rather than having to wait several minutes for the computer to turn on and boot up.

TURN IT OFF:

The hard drive may last longer. Since it is composed of moving parts, it stands to reason, the less they move, the longer it will last. This may not be much of an issue with newer computers. The hard drive will probably last longer than the useful life of the computer, regardless.

If the computer is on all the time, it will suck more dust through the ventilation vents. More dust = more heat = shorter life span for the computer, so it may be worthwhile to turn it off when not in use.

All computers can benefit from the occasional reboot, and turning them off allows this to happen. Over time, minor things go wrong and the computer doesn’t bother to inform you; it tries to patch itself up and moves on. The cumulative affect of all these little hiccups can be to reduce performance or even cause the computer to freeze or crash. Turning the computer off now and then gives it a chance to reset itself and start fresh.

Turning the computer off when idle uses less electricity. Depending on your computer, it may use as much electricity as one or more 100 watt light bulbs. That can add up to quite a few dollars over the lifetime of the computer. Also, less electricity expended means less carbon emissions, which is better for the environment, reduces global warming, etc. etc. etc.

ON THE SUBJECT OF ELECTRICITY: While we’re talking about electricity, there are settings on all computers that we can adjust to save power right now.

If you have a PC running XP, right-click on the desktop, and choose “properties” from the menu that pops up. This will open a little window titled “Display Properties” with several tabs underneath. Click on the “Screen Saver” tab. On the bottom of this tab is a section titled “Monitor power” with a button labeled “Power...” - click on this button to bring up a window titled “Power Options Properties.”

On a Mac running OSX, choose “System Preferences...” from the Apple menu, then click on “Energy Saver.”

Computers running different systems will have slightly different menus and settings, but the main idea will be the same. Explaining all the different settings is beyond the scope of this article. Suffice to say, these settings let you control how long the computer can run unattended (with nothing going on) before different parts of the system are turned off, or put to sleep, to save electricity. There are separate settings for the monitor (screen), hard disk, and the system (the entire computer).

Depending on how you use your computer, you can experiment with the settings to complement the way you work. Don’t be afraid to tinker. Nothing you change here will damage the computer. Of course, the more things you turn off, and the sooner you turn them off, the more energy you’ll save.

MY RECOMMENDATIONS: These aren’t Commandments; they’re suggestions. Be flexible and tailor them to your needs. If you plan on using your computer in the next 8 hours, leave it on. If not, turn it off or put it to sleep. I leave mine on during the day, and turn it off overnight. My computer is set to go to sleep if I walk away for more than twenty minutes. This way, my computer benefits from the occasional reboot, and I can reduce my total energy use, even if it is only a little bit.

Digital Radio- The New American Revolution

Americans are nothing if not selectively fickle. It took almost no persuasion for them to abandon their analog landline technology-based telephones, camera, and record players in favor of digitally based alternatives.

But when it comes to their listening pleasure, Americans have been fighting

the digital revolution with as much gusto as they fought the American one. They are however, beginning to come around. Having spotty reception, or none, on long commutes or when in the back country on a recreational outing, or simply because they live in a particularly reception-unfriendly area has finally made many Americans start to take notice of their digital radio options.

The first digital radio alternative is satellite radio. Both Sirius and XM Satellite radio have eliminated the commercials from their digital radio transmissions and are beaming their broadcasts into the automobile receivers of millions of US drivers, no matter where they are located. The glitch is that the service is subscription only, and many older cars do not have the satellite digital radio receivers. And in some large urban areas, the reception is lacking, although Sirius and XM are working on fixes for their problems.

But between them Sirius and XM have still managed to collar only fifteen million of the estimated two hundred and thirty million AM/FM listeners in the US. The two companies have applied to the FCC for permission to discuss a merger, which will cut costs for both. But even a single entity may never move satellite digital radio beyond the niche stage.

The real up-and-comers in the US digital radio field appears to be local radio stations, both because they do not charge their listeners, and because the price of digital radio receivers is beginning to drop rapidly. At the beginning of 2006, a digital radio receiver cost a minimum of $500; now the most expensive are half that. With rebates it is frequently possible to find a digital radio receiver for under $100.

Hybrid digital radio is the result of combining digital power with the regular broadcasting of an AM or FM station. It costs a traditional broadcasting station upwards of $100,000 to make the transition to Hybrid Digital technology, and even then they have to pay royalties to iBiquity, which developed the process. But more than 1300 radio stations have either bought, or plan to buy, the necessary equipment.

Blu-Ray Innovations

TigerDirect

Paper Blu-ray discs? How can that be possible? Not only does paper sound low-tech, how can it possibly handle the abuse that DVDs and CDs undergo? Sony has developed a Blu-ray disc that is made of over 50% paper yet is capable of storing a full 25 gigabytes of data.

You may wonder what possible advantages going to a paper-based bluray disc offers. As an alternative to plastic, paper is the environmental choice. Blu-ray technology is unlike DVD and CD technology. The blue laser does not need light to travel through the substrate making paper a conceivable option. In addition, paper blu-ray products can be printed directly on giving more creative control to the artistic set. Finally, low tech as it sounds, paper is more secure than other optical formats. When the data on a paper Blu-ray disc is no longer needed, simply cut the disc with scissors and throw it away.

Another innovation in Blu-ray technology is the added capacity of multi-layering. TDK’s prototype 200 gigabyte – that’s right, two hundred gigabyte – disc is capable of storing 18 hours of high-definition video encoded at 24 mbps. In addition, TDK features an 8cm mini Blu-ray disc format with smaller storage capacities that are the perfect fit for the next generation of Blu-ray camcorders. Blu-ray technology in the form of a mini disc will allow camcorders to record unprecedented lengths of footage at unheard of quality levels.

Finally, TDK’s innovative “Snap N’ Save” cases seal out dust and dirt for that can damage DVDs, CDs, and Blu-ray discs. These cases are designed to replace spindles and allow for better physical storage.

From paper Blu-ray products (still sounds low tech to us but we know it’s not) to the miniaturization of Blu-ray technology to building a better storage case, the innovations taking place are astounding.

Copyright and the Internet

If a piece of work or something someone/some people have created then they should own the rights to it and therefore it belongs to them. There is of course varying degrees in how many rights they reserve and different countries more than likely have their own interpretations, but on the web this becomes a bit more of a grey area, with no-one to stringently enforce the laws, that's not to say that if you do violate them you wont be caught.

I was always told "In order not to plagiarize someones work, you read a book, close it, then write what you have learned from memory and that way you are not plagiarizing". With that in mind it might also be considered a good idea to make reference to the material used; this of course would be with regards to a book or an article belonging to someone else.

From a standpoint of websites and SEO it is always going to be better to not use someone else's published material, whether they give you right to or otherwise. This is because search engines are looking for original content, content that is unique and can only be traced to one source. So, by using someone else's work or writings a search engine is likely to put your site far back or near the end of the search results and class your page as being in one form or another as a copy.

How to avoid breaking Copyright and Plagiarism

1. Do not directly copy or lift sentences/paragraphs of someone's work, that is not to say you cannot use someone else's work in a quote to back up what you are saying so long as you reference the original author properly.

2. If you have found something in someone else's work that you like or need to use in some manor, then you can always paraphrase, by doing so you are rewriting the original document in your own words and way as to make the text clearer. With paraphrasing you are not allowed to use distinct phrases or words that have already been used by the author.

3. Check your Countries Copyright laws as different Countries have different copyright laws or at lease different interpretations of the law. This may also be useful if using someone else's work from a different country.

4. If in doubt about whether you're breaking copyright or any laws, then avoid the questionable act until such time as you can get clarification or find the correct answer. This way you can avoid any legal action by not taking a unnecessary risk.

Affiliate Marketing - The Best Affiliate Strategy For You

Lower your eCommerce Costs

Affiliate marketing is a great way to earn money, sometimes a lot of money online. There are many affiliate programs to choose from, so choosing the right affiliate program for you will help you succeed easier and earn more money.

When choosing an affiliate program there are many things to consider. One of the most important things to consider when choosing an affiliate marketing program is would you buy the product or service you are selling. Would you fork over your hard earned cash for what you are promoting? If you can definitely say yes then you are on your way to success.

Another thing to consider is how much commission does the affiliate program pay out per sale. The amount of commission or the money you get paid per sale determines how much money you can spend promoting a program. The other important thing to consider is the conversion rate of the product. The conversion rate is simply how many people purchase the program for every 100 visitors. Normally any thing over 1% is good.

So by looking at these two factors, the conversion rate, and the amount of commission you are paid, you can better decide how much money you can spend when promoting an affiliate product.

Competition is another factor you should look at when promoting a product. Some people prefer to market an item to a smaller market hoping to dominate it. Other people believe that you should promote products to markets where people are already spending a lot of money.

There are many decisions to be made when choosing an affiliate marketing program. If you take the time and choose wisely you can earn a lot of money doing affiliate marketing.

How To Start Not Making Money In Affiliate Marketing?

Make fast money with affiliate marketing.

This might be the advertisement you see over and over again about affiliate marketing. Being only human enough, you get lured into these promises and anticipate wide-eyed for the money to come in instantly.

This is the most common mistake that people make once they get into affiliate marketing. Many newbies have fallen victim by those who are promoting the business successfully enough.

But then, they get to realize later on that they are not really making the kind of money being promised. And they thought that affiliate marketing was indeed a simple business.

Many of you may have heard so many wonderful things about affiliate programs. You may have also heard of testimonials of people who are earning more money by endorsing the products or services of other people.

And why not? The commissions you will be getting is more than great. All you have to do is get the word out to the right people and soon they will be making their way to your affiliate sites. It all seems very easy. Not really.

Getting into many and various affiliate programs.

Many newbies think that affiliate marketing is a numbers game. So to be successful, they would need big numbers. These marketers would try and get into every affiliate marketing program in the hope that the more program, the more the profits.

Getting into more affiliate marketing program do not work. Instead of concentrating on one and giving it your best shot, you are torn between which ones to put into first place and which ones should be last.

In the end, your affiliate marketing will not work the way you expect it to.

One thing that beginner affiliate marketers forget is to focus on one product or service first before they could go on getting more than they could handle.

As with other types of business, affiliate marketing is a continuous learning process that have to be researched on and learned to be able to have an initial idea what it is you are marketing about.
